Hope Water & Light customers may notice slight changes in their water service beginning May 14, 2019 as the water department begins a “Water System Flushing Program”.

Hope Water & Light customers may notice slight changes in their water service beginning May 14, 2019 as the water department begins a “Water System Flushing Program”.  Waterlines will be flushed starting at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 and continue for approximately three to four weeks.  When flushing is taking place in your neighborhood, you’ll see Hope Water & Light employees working at fire hydrants.  A large flow of water will be discharged from the fire hydrants and may be discolored for short periods of time.  Forcing this water to move through the waterlines at higher velocities and out through the fire hydrants creates a scouring action to help remove rust deposits and other sediments that can collect in the water system over a period of time.

Water service will not be turned off during the flushing process.  Therefore, customers may experience fluctuating water pressure and/or discolored water for short periods of time.  Because multiple crews will be working, discoloration may occur in different areas at the same time.  The discolored water is not a health threat.  However, IT MAY STAIN FABRICS IF USED FOR LAUNDRY PURPOSES.  Residents are encouraged to first check their water for color before cooking, bathing or washing clothes.  If you notice discolored water in your private water system, do not run any appliances that require water until you take the following steps:

Turn on each cold water faucet in your home or business.  Allow the water to run a few minutes until it is clear.

Flush each toilet two times.

If, after following these steps, you still have discolored water in your water system, wait two or three hours and repeat the above process.  This should give the water system time to return to normal.  If you still have discoloration, please call Hope Water & Light at 777-3000.

The purpose of this “Water System Flushing Program” is to improve water quality for the benefit of our customers and to properly maintain our water distribution system.  We would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by this necessary maintenance program.
